I'd think that Wilson was also a backup plan encase someone decided to jump ahead of the Broncos to grab Nix, like we did to the Cowboys a few years ago when we jumped ahead of them to grab Paxton Lynch. If that did happen, of course Payton would’ve lied through his teeth by claiming that Wilson was the only QB he was considering, like when McD told us that Orton was the man he wanted along.

Yeah, that's exactly what I think too. This was a very smart move for a lot of reasons. A very cheap insurance policy and possible backup (if he wins the spot in camp) for a year.

A backup up plan and smokescreen.

An additional probable reason is we can have a temporary starter until Nix is ready. If he's not ready before camp ends, then our bye week would be a good bet. Then again, how bad would he have to be to not be able to beat out Wilson
